Family Guy Online Survey
This invitation is being made as a part of the requirements of an honours thesis being undertaken at Edith Cowan University.
The purpose of this project is to examine the formation of social networks forged through a shared interest, in this case the television program Family Guy. Since its debut Family Guy has attained a cult following, particularly in instances where episodes are aired sporadically on commercial free to air networks, resulting in fans collecting episodes and information surrounding the show through the internet. This experience of shared knowledge and shared files (Family Guy episodes) has allowed fans to build friendships through their common interest.
This research will build upon work already done concerning collector culture and offer an insight into the consumption habits of popular culture by generation X and generation Y (generation Y are those born between 1980 – 1999).
The aims of this project are to:
1. investigate the socialization of ‘young’ people watching Family Guy episodes obtained through the internet
2. establish why the participants identify with Family Guy
3. address the purposes of collecting (both physical collecting of episodes and the collection of knowledge around Family Guy) within the social group
4. fulfill the requirements of an Honours degree
Results of this survey will be compiled for analysis. Participant’s identities will be kept anonymous and participants will not be identifiable within the results. Collected data will be used to produce a research thesis for submission to Edith Cowan University in order to complete the Honours year requirements, and the findings may also be submitted for publication by refereed academic journals.
Participation within this research is strictly voluntary and the withdrawal of participation may occur at any time.
